About Château Mazeyres

Set on the western and southern terraces of the Pomerol plateau, Château Mazeyres traces vineyard records back to the 14th century. Alain Moueix directed viticulture and winemaking from 1992 to 2020/2021, building the estate's organic farming practice (certified 2015), before transitioning to estate consultant following the Guillard family's acquisition (agreed 2020, formally completed 2021).

The 2016 growing season swung from a wet spring to a record-dry summer before a decisive rain in mid-September restored balance ahead of harvest. Gentle extraction shaped a wine with delicate notes of white peach, violet and tea, earning recognition including a Coup de cœur selection from La Revue du Vin de France.

Certified organic (AB, ECOCERT France, FR-BIO-01) since 2015, with 2016 marking the second vintage under full certification.A blend of 88% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.Fruit drawn from three distinct terroir zones across the Pomerol plateau.Directed by Alain Moueix from 1992 to 2020/2021; now serves as estate consultant following the Guillard family's acquisition (agreed 2020, completed 2021).

At the table

The wine's soft tannins and forest-floor undertones find a natural rhythm with dishes built on umami depth and earthy aromatics.

Across Japanese, Thai and Western tables, the wine's gentle structure and red-fruit freshness draw out the savory character of duck, mushroom and roasted preparations without overwhelming them.

Japanese

  • Duck and scallion skewers (kamo negima)
  • Matsutake mushroom clear broth (dobin-mushi)
  • Seared wagyu tataki with ponzu

Why it worksThe wine's soft tannins and delicate red-fruit character echo the savory depth of duck fat and mushroom broth, while its freshness balances the richness of seared beef.

Thai

  • Roasted duck red curry (gaeng phed ped yang)
  • Mushroom coconut soup (tom kha het)
  • Beef massaman curry

Why it worksWarm spice and broth-like umami in Thai cooking meet the wine's gentle fruit and forest-floor notes, softening the dish's richness rather than competing with it.

Western

  • Roast beef with red wine jus
  • Venison with wild mushroom sauté
  • A selection of aged cheeses

Why it worksThe savory depth of roasted meat and game, along with the salinity of aged cheese, complements the wine's structure and elegant tannin.

Winemaking

The 2016 harvest was picked by hand between late September and mid-October, following a season that moved from a wet spring to a record-dry summer before a decisive mid-September rain restored balance ahead of picking. Vinification favored gentle extraction, with aging spread across new oak, one- and two-year barrels, and concrete and egg-shaped vats.

Product detail

The blend of 88% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot was drawn from 23.80 hectares within the estate's 25.5-hectare Pomerol vineyard, yielding 43 hectoliters per hectare.
