About the Wine

Château Mazane is a single 11-hectare estate plot within Vacqueyras AOC, acquired by the Jaume family of Vignobles Alain Jaume in 2013. Since then the vineyard has converted to organic farming and is bottled independently as a single-estate wine.

The 2022 vintage blends Grenache Noir 60%, Syrah 30% and Mourvèdre 10%. Fermentation and ageing across concrete tank and French oak barrel preserve fruit concentration alongside the site's inherent structure.

Taste profile

In the glass

Ripe dark plum, blueberry and wild blackberry lead, followed by graphite, smoked meat and new leather; swirling releases garrigue herbs, white pepper and liquorice.

Medium-to-full bodied, with rich alcohol and concentrated fruit held firm by the wine's own clean, taut acidity, preserved by fermentation in neutral concrete tank; tannins are dense yet fine-grained, framed by restrained oak, finishing long on pepper, earth and saline minerality.

Deep, dense garnet.

Timing

Suggested drinking window (our estimate, informed by the vintage's structure and Jeb Dunnuck's note that the wine will keep evolving over the next 10–12 years): 2026–2034; young bottles benefit from around one to two hours of aeration before serving.

03

Glassware

Large-bowl glass, Burgundy-style, suited to structured Rhône reds.

At the table

The wine's density and structure call for dishes that match its concentration while echoing its herbal, peppery core.

Across Japanese, Thai and Western tables, the same principle applies: pair with dishes carrying enough fat, umami or spice warmth to meet the wine's tannic grip halfway.

Japanese

  • Charcoal-grilled beef fillet with light tare
  • Sukiyaki with a lightly sweet-savoury sauce
  • Soy-marinated tuna akami zuke

Why it worksBroth-forward umami and moderate fat soften the wine's concentrated tannins without overpowering it.

Thai

  • Massaman beef curry (mild)
  • Northern Thai sai oua (light)
  • Khao soi beef (mild)

Why it worksWarm spice without heavy chili or lime intensity complements the wine's structure rather than clashing with it.

Western

  • Herb-grilled lamb
  • Roast duck breast
  • Herb-grilled summer vegetables

Why it worksLamb's gamey character echoes the wine's garrigue and pepper notes, while duck fat helps round out its tight tannins.

Winemaking

Grapes are hand-harvested and double-sorted on a vibrating table, 50–70% destemmed, then fermented in thick concrete tanks at up to 28°C with an 18–25 day maceration of regular pump-overs and punch-downs. Ageing runs roughly ten months, split two-thirds concrete tank and one-third French oak, with batonnage on fine lees.

Vineyard & soilLimestone pebbles (galets) from the Dentelles de Montmirail over deep clay; vines averaging 50 years
EstateWholly owned and farmed by the Jaume family within their broader domaine

The plateau sits between the terraces of the Ouvèze river and the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, wrapped in wild-herb garrigue scrubland. The estate's stony soils retain daytime heat and release it overnight, supporting the ripening that defines Vacqueyras reds.
