Northern Rhône White Wine
ALAIN JAUMECondrieu La Butte d'Or
On a steep granite slope above the Rhône, Viognier finds a site so mineral and demanding that its natural exuberance turns into precision — the paradox at the heart of Condrieu La Butte d'Or.

About the Wine
Alain Jaume, a Southern Rhône winegrowing family, sources this cuvée from Condrieu, the Northern Rhône appellation known as Viognier's home ground.
Grown on steep, east-to-southeast-facing granite slopes, the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented on their lees, then aged for several months in fine-grain oak with only a small share of new wood, giving the wine its structure without masking Viognier's floral character.
In the glass
Appearance
Pale gold deepening to a bright, luminous golden hue.
Aroma
Apricot, apricot jam and orange marmalade lead, layered with ripe white peach, acacia blossom, a touch of honey, white pepper and ginger.
Palate
Full and plump on entry, with dried apricot and honey flavors carried by a taut, granite-driven acidity and fine, barely-there tannins; the finish is long, saline and mineral, closing on pure white peach compote.
Before it reaches the glass
Temperature
8–9°C for an aperitif pour, or closer to 12°C alongside richer dishes.
Timing
Best enjoyed in its youth, generally within a few years of the vintage.
Glassware
A mid-sized Bordeaux glass or a generous white wine glass concentrates the aromatics; decanting is best avoided, as Viognier is sensitive to extended air contact.
At the table
Full-bodied and aromatic, this Condrieu bridges delicate and richer dishes alike.
Its plush texture and bright acidity let it stand up to butter and cream while its floral, stone-fruit perfume echoes citrus- and spice-forward dishes across several cuisines.
Japanese
- Citrus-accented white fish sashimi
- Salt-grilled prawns
- Yuan-yaki grilled white fish
Why it worksThe wine's fuller body and fragrant lift echo the citrus and gentle salinity typical of these preparations without overwhelming them.
Thai
- Chicken satay with peanut sauce
- Mild green curry
- Mild goat cheese
Why it worksViognier's ripe fruit and weight balance the sweetness and spice of satay and green curry, while its texture suits a soft, mild cheese course.
Western
- White fish or lobster with beurre blanc
- Foie gras terrine
- Veal in cream sauce
Why it worksThe wine's richness and lees-derived texture mirror butter- and cream-based preparations, while its acidity keeps the pairing from feeling heavy.
From cellar to bottle
Winemaking
Grapes are hand-picked, then fermented on their lees in temperature-controlled stainless steel or oak; the wine is aged for seven to ten months in fine-grain oak barrels, no more than 10% new, with weekly bâtonnage that builds texture and the toasted, bread-like notes drawn from lees contact.
Product detail

Origin & Terroir
This cuvée is part of Alain Jaume's négociant selection, distinct from the family's own Domaine Grand Veneur estate, though it draws on the same attention to fruit sourcing and vineyard site.
