Watercolor illustration of a vineyard path splitting beside a historic stone house

Les Hauts de Lynch-Moussas

Castéja

Château Lynch-Moussas: The side that kept the name of Moussas, not Bages

Watercolor illustration of a vineyard path splitting beside a historic stone house

The name Château Lynch-Moussas becomes clearer when read beside Château Lynch-Bages, the other château carrying the Lynch family name. Lynch is a family name, while Moussas is a place name. Saying that this is the “Moussas side” does not mean that it has no connection with Bages. The two properties are connected by the division of an estate that once carried the Lynch name. The distinction is which place name remained in each château name after the division.

Three things to establish first

Item Detail
Official name Château Lynch-Moussas
Village / AOC Pauillac / Pauillac
1855 Classification Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru)
Second wine Les Hauts de Lynch-Moussas

First, Thomas Lynch inherited the Moussas-Bages property in the middle of the eighteenth century and brought the Lynch name into its history. Second, the official history says that Château Lynch was divided between the Moussas side and the Bages side in 1835, with the buildings remaining on the Moussas side. Third, the property was bought by the Vasquez family in 1847, classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855, and later passed into the history of the Castéja family. Separating name, division and succession makes the property easier to place.

How the Lynch name entered Moussas

According to the official Lynch-Moussas history, Thomas Lynch inherited Domaine de Moussas-Bages in 1748 through his wife Elisabeth Drouillard and renamed it Château Lynch. The official history of No. 50 Château Lynch-Bages gives 1750 for Thomas Lynch’s acquisition of the Domaine de Bages. Both are official accounts, but the dates do not agree. This article therefore places the event in the middle of the eighteenth century and records the discrepancy rather than forcing one date into a single conclusion.

This history means that Moussas was not an isolated starting point unrelated to Bages. The original name placed Moussas and Bages together, and the later division left the two place names in separate château names. To understand Lynch-Moussas, the place name Moussas must therefore be read together with its historical connection to Bages.

In 1835, Château Lynch was divided

The official Lynch-Moussas history records that Château Lynch was divided in 1835 after the death of Jean-Baptiste Lynch. One part became Château Lynch-Moussas at Moussas, while the Bages part became Château Lynch-Bages. The buildings remained on the Lynch-Moussas side. This division is essential to reading the present names.

No. 50 Château Lynch-Bages presents the same event from the Bages side. The two pages do not merge two separate ownership histories into one; they illuminate the same 1835 division from their respective names and places. By contrast, no verified basis was found for extending this Lynch division history to Château Haut-Bages Libéral or Château Croizet-Bages merely because they also contain the name Bages.

The 1847 purchase and the Fifth Growth in 1855

The official history states that the Vasquez family bought the château in 1847 and that it was later classified as a Fifth Growth in the Médoc in 1855. The Bordeaux official 1855 list also places Château Lynch-Moussas among the Pauillac Fifth Growths (Cinquième Cru). Here, Fifth Growth is treated as an institutional position in a nineteenth-century classification, not as an advertising claim of quality superiority.

The Castéja period and the second wine from 2001

In the twentieth century, Jean Castéja acquired the château in 1919. The official history says that Émile Castéja took responsibility for its operation in 1970 and that Philippe Castéja took over management in the 2000s. These are historical records of when a family became involved in ownership and operation. This article does not infer the current legal structure of any company or its relationship with Borie-Manoux.

The official Lynch-Moussas history states that Les Hauts de Lynch-Moussas began as the second wine from the 2001 vintage. Returning to the contrast in the name, Lynch-Moussas is not separated from Bages simply because it lacks the plateau name. It shares the history of the Lynch division while preserving the place name of the Moussas side.

Three Facts Worth Knowing

  • The 1748 and 1750 dates are differing official accounts of Thomas Lynch’s acquisition.
  • The official history says that in 1835 Château Lynch divided into Château Lynch-Moussas on the Moussas side and Château Lynch-Bages on the Bages side.
  • Les Hauts de Lynch-Moussas began as the second wine from the 2001 vintage.

Bages

Watercolor illustration of a vineyard path splitting beside a historic stone house

5 (Cinquième Cru)
Les Hauts de Lynch-Moussas

Thomas Lynch
Bages
  • Les Hauts de Lynch-Moussas
