In 2021, a spring frost forced Domaine de Villaine to set aside single-vineyard bottling for its finest red parcels — La Digoine, La Fortune, Mercurey Les Montots and Santenay 1er Cru Passetemps — and gather them instead into one Bourgogne Rouge. The result carries an echo of terroirs usually kept apart.

DOMAINE DE VILLAINE Santenay 1er Cru Passetemps 2020

A small Côte de Beaune vineyard closes a family circle: the same ancestor of today's proprietor, Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet, once owned this Santenay slope and went on to acquire Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1869. Domaine de Villaine, otherwise rooted in the Côte Chalonnaise, now farms the plot itself, bringing a Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir into an estate built around Bouzeron.

On a steep slope just below Rully's Raclot and Rabourcé climats, mature Pinot Noir vines and a whole-cluster approach shape a red built to unfold slowly — raspberry fruit framed by supple tannin and a mouth-watering mineral finish that lingers on the palate.

DOMAINE DE VILLAINE La Digoine 2020

At the foot of the l'Hermitage slope in Bouzeron, a near-monopole plot called La Digoine has anchored Domaine de Villaine's red wines since the estate's first vintage in 1973. In a growing season that pushed Burgundy to some of its hottest, driest conditions in decades, the Pinot Noir grown on this shallow clay-and-limestone site produced a vintage that Decanter and Burghound both praised for its depth, structure and ageing potential.

In a valley between the limestone peaks of Pic Saint-Loup and the Hortus plateau, the Ravaille family tends old bush vines to craft this Syrah-led cuvée. Minimal-intervention winemaking — wild yeasts, very low sulphite — draws out its smoky leather and ripe fruit character.

HÉRITAGE DU PIC SAINT LOUP Guilhem Gaucelm 2020

Guilhem Gaucelm takes its name from a steward recorded in 13th-century archives of the Pic Saint-Loup hills, where the Ravaille family has tended vines for generations. Grown on ancient, low-trained vines in a valley cradled between two limestone peaks, this cuvée is still made by hand, parcel by parcel.

DOMAINE DE L’ENCLOS Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir

Vaudésir is regarded as the warmest climat within Chablis Grand Cru, its fully south-facing, amphitheatre-shaped slope gathering sun that few other grand cru sites receive. From this parcel, Domaine de l'Enclos draws a Chardonnay where ripe orchard fruit and the bracing, oyster-shell minerality of Kimmeridgian limestone meet in the same glass.
