Watercolor illustration of a woodland estate and vineyards with faint parcel lines

Saint-Laurent-Médoc(Haut-Médoc AOC)
Diane de Belgrave

Haut-Médoc

  • Diane de Belgrave

At Saint-Laurent-Médoc, yet named Belgrave rather than after the village — Château Belgrave

Watercolor illustration of a woodland estate and vineyards with faint parcel lines

Château Belgrave is a classified estate in the Haut-Médoc AOC and a Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru) in the 1855 Classification. Its official address is Saint-Laurent-Médoc. The important distinction is between a place name and a classification area. The current official list places Château Belgrave, Château de Camensac and Château Cantemerle among the Haut-Médoc Fifth Growths. The official address confirms Saint-Laurent-Médoc for Belgrave and Camensac, while Cantemerle's legal notice gives Macau. There is no basis for treating the three estates as one village group or one divided property.

Official name Château Belgrave
Village / district Saint-Laurent-Médoc (Haut-Médoc AOC)
1855 Classification Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru)
Second wine Diane de Belgrave

A name established through history, not a village label

Belgrave's official history connects the present site with the Darrouilh land, including a hunting lodge dating to the time of Louis XV. That lodge is cultural-historical context; it is not evidence for a present-day quality assessment.

The sources differ on when the land name Bellegrave first appears in the record. The château's own history places the name in a land register in 1851, while an official Dourthe document gives 1845 as the first occurrence. Rather than treating either year as exclusively settled, it is more accurate to say that the name Bellegrave appears in the sources in the middle of the nineteenth century. The meaning or etymology of Belgrave should not be filled in with speculation.

Coutanceau in the 1855 Classification

The château's official history says that the property was classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855 under the name Coutanceau, not the Belgrave name used today. The name in the classification record and the name established later were therefore not identical. The current Bordeaux official list places Château Belgrave among the Haut-Médoc Fifth Growths.

The same official history records that Marcel Alibert formally adopted the name Belgrave at the beginning of the twentieth century. Bellegrave in earlier records, Coutanceau in 1855 and the later formal adoption of Belgrave should be read as layers of documentary and institutional naming, not as one simple spelling change.

Dourthe after 1979 and a second wine linked to the site's hunting history

According to Belgrave's official history, Maison Dourthe took over the property in 1979. The current official site lists the Dourthe management team as well as Belgrave's Estate Manager, Cellar Master and Vineyard Manager. The cautious formulation is that Dourthe is documented as the ownership and operating subject from 1979 onward; the detailed legal structure is not inferred here.

In 1987, Diane de Belgrave was created as a second wine. The official history connects the name with the site's historical relationship to hunting. The official wine page identifies Diane de Belgrave as Belgrave's Second wine and says that it mainly uses younger vines. The name's history and the wine's composition should be kept separate from any claim about rank or quality.

Reading Haut-Médoc geography separately

Belgrave is easier to understand once the village address is separated from the AOC and classification area. Château de Camensac is another estate at Saint-Laurent-Médoc, while Château Cantemerle is legally located at Macau. All three are Haut-Médoc Fifth Growths, but they are not three estates in the same village and there is no evidence that they are one divided property. Three of the 18 Fifth Growths in this series are classified in Haut-Médoc.

The same series includes the Fourth Growth Château La Tour Carnet and the Third Growth Château La Lagune. Keeping classification and address separate prevents geography from being turned into an assumption about ownership.

Three Facts Worth Knowing

  • Belgrave is located at Saint-Laurent-Médoc and is currently listed as a Haut-Médoc Fifth Growth.
  • Official sources differ between 1845 and 1851 for the first recorded appearance of Bellegrave. The 1855 record uses Coutanceau, and Belgrave was formally adopted at the beginning of the twentieth century.
  • Diane de Belgrave was created as a second wine in 1987, and its name reflects the site's historical connection with hunting.

Watercolor illustration of a woodland estate and vineyards with faint parcel lines

Haut-Médoc

Haut-Médoc
  • Diane de Belgrave
