Why did this name change three times in the twentieth century? Château d'Armailhac

Three things to establish first
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Official name | Château d'Armailhac |
| Village / AOC | Pauillac / Pauillac |
| 1855 Classification | Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru) |
The present name Château d'Armailhac does not, by itself, explain the turns in the property's history. The key is that its name changed three times in the twentieth century: Château Mouton Baron Philippe from the 1934 vintage, Château Mouton Baronne Philippe from 1975, and Château d'Armailhac again from 1989. These changes are best read as a sequence of documented names and ownership, not as a reason to fill gaps with speculation.
From the Mouton seigneurie to an autonomous estate in 1660
The official history says that the property was initially associated with the seigneurie de Mouton. In 1660, the d'Armailhacq family made the property autonomous, and the family name became the starting point for the name used today. The historical association with Mouton must be separated from the present estate: Château d'Armailhac is its own property.
In the 1855 Médoc classification, the estate appeared under the historical name Château Mouton-d'Armailhacq. The current official Bordeaux list places Château D'ARMAILHAC in Pauillac among the Fifth Growths. A relationship with Château Mouton Rothschild does not make d'Armailhac a First Growth.
Mouton entered the name after the 1933 acquisition
Baron Philippe de Rothschild acquired the property in 1933. The official history also notes that 1933 was the birth year of his daughter Philippine, but it does not state a psychological reason for the acquisition or the subsequent name change. This article therefore keeps to the documented sequence.
From the 1934 vintage the name became Château Mouton Baron Philippe. From 1975 it became Château Mouton Baronne Philippe, which the official history describes as a tribute to Pauline. The word Mouton in those historical names records a period of naming history; it does not mean that the property became part of Château Mouton Rothschild.
The former name returned in 1989
In 1989, Philippine de Rothschild restored the name Château d'Armailhac. The official material confirms the restoration but does not give a psychological explanation for why the decision was made. The three turning points, 1934, 1975 and 1989, are therefore presented as documented changes in name and ownership rather than as an invented motive.
Keep the three Pauillac estates distinct
Today, Château d'Armailhac is owned by Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, the three children of Philippine de Rothschild. Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. manages the estate under a long-term lease structure.
This arrangement concerns three separate Pauillac properties: Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac. They are connected by family ownership and management, but d'Armailhac is not part of the Château Mouton Rothschild estate and has a separate classification. The official material does not confirm a second-wine name for Château d'Armailhac, so no unverified name is added here.
Three Facts Worth Knowing
- In 1660, the d'Armailhacq family made a property associated with the Mouton seigneurie autonomous, giving its family name a lasting place in the estate's history.
- The name moved from Château Mouton Baron Philippe in 1934 to Château Mouton Baronne Philippe in 1975, then returned to Château d'Armailhac in 1989.
- The three children of Philippine de Rothschild own the property, while Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. manages it through a long-term lease structure.

5 (Cinquième Cru) |
Mouton
Château Mouton Rothschild
