John Lynch
息子のThomas Lynch(トーマス・リンチ)は、Pierre Drouillard(ピエール・ドルイヤール)の娘との婚姻を通じてDomaine de Bagesを取得した。
Bages
Echo de Lynch-Bages

Château Lynch-Bages: Why did the name of an Irish family remain in Bages, Pauillac?

The name Château Lynch-Bages places a family name beside a place name. Lynch refers to a family from Ireland, while Bages refers to an old settlement at the entrance to Pauillac and to the land around it. Why, then, did the name of a family that moved from Ireland to Bordeaux become tied to this place and remain there?
Three things to establish first
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Official name | Château Lynch-Bages |
| Village / AOC | Pauillac / Pauillac |
| 1855 Classification | Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru) |
The first point is the Lynch family’s move to Bordeaux and the acquisition connected with a marriage into the Drouillard family. The second is the nineteenth-century division that produced two châteaux carrying the Lynch name. The third is the succession through the Cazes family from the twentieth century onward, together with an older name preserved in the current second-wine history. Keeping these three threads separate prevents the origin of the name from being confused with the present property.
John Lynch moved to Bordeaux
According to the official Lynch-Bages history, John Lynch, from Galway in Ireland, moved to Bordeaux in 1691. The point is not simply to describe the château as Irish. The surname Lynch entered Bordeaux first as the history of a migrant and his family.
His son Thomas Lynch acquired the Domaine de Bages through his marriage to the daughter of Pierre Drouillard. Official accounts differ on the year: one gives 1748 and another gives 1750. This article therefore does not force one date into an absolute conclusion. It places the acquisition in the middle of the eighteenth century and records the discrepancy between the official accounts. That marriage is the point at which family name and place name became joined in the history of the property.
What was Bages?
Bages is an old settlement at the entrance to Pauillac. The official Lynch-Bages history explains that land called Batges appears in a sixteenth-century record and that Bages was home to generations of growers. The name Bages therefore carries a memory of place separate from the Lynch family surname.
This distinction matters when reading the other pages in the group. Château Haut-Bages Libéral and Château Croizet-Bages also share the place or topographical name Bages, but no primary official source checked here establishes that the three properties came from the same estate or the same owning family. A shared name and a shared ownership history are not the same claim.
In 1835, the Lynch property was divided
The official history of Château Lynch-Moussas states that after the death of Jean-Baptiste Lynch, Château Lynch was divided in 1835. One part became the château at Moussas, Château Lynch-Moussas, while the part at Bages became Château Lynch-Bages. The same official account says that the buildings remained on the Lynch-Moussas side.
The name Lynch-Bages therefore preserves more than the surname of the Lynch family. It preserves the historical family name as it became linked to the Bages side after the division. The Lynch-Moussas account gives 1748 for the earlier acquisition, while the Lynch-Bages account gives 1750. No primary source in the present research resolves the difference, so preserving both official dates is more accurate than selecting one without qualification.
The Fifth Growth in 1855 and succession through the Cazes family
In the Bordeaux official 1855 Classification, Château Lynch-Bages appears in the Pauillac list of Fifth Growths (Cinquième Cru). Here the classification is used as an institutional position in a nineteenth-century list, not as a claim of quality superiority.
The official history records that Jean-Charles Cazes bought Lynch-Bages after the 1929 crash and took over its management in 1934. The succession through the Cazes family then became part of the château’s modern history. The official family history states that in 2007 Jean-Charles Cazes took over the family properties and advanced renovation work at the winery. These are records of ownership and operation, not an attempt to borrow status from a classification.
The memory of the name Echo de Lynch-Bages
Official vintage information states that Château Haut-Bages Averous served as the second wine for more than thirty years and was renamed Echo de Lynch-Bages from 2008. The present name may look recent, but the change from the former name to the later name is also a record of how the château’s wine structure was organized over time.
In brief, the name can be read through John Lynch’s move from Galway to Bordeaux in 1691, Thomas Lynch’s acquisition of Bages through a marriage into the Drouillard family in the middle of the eighteenth century, the division of 1835, and the succession through the Cazes family from the twentieth century onward. It is not only a surname and not only a place name. Migration, marriage, division and succession overlap in the name Lynch-Bages.
A comparison with Château Kirwan
Château Kirwan is another page in this series where the name of an Irish family remained in Bordeaux. The two are separate châteaux and do not share an ownership history. Rather than repeat the broader Wine Geese context covered on the Kirwan page, this page stays with the relationship between the Lynch family and Bages.
Three Facts Worth Knowing
- John Lynch moved from Galway to Bordeaux in 1691, and Thomas Lynch acquired the Bages property through a marriage into the Drouillard family. Official accounts give 1748 and 1750 for the acquisition year.
- In 1835, the official history says Château Lynch divided into Château Lynch-Bages on the Bages side and Château Lynch-Moussas on the Moussas side.
- In 2008, the second-wine name changed from Château Haut-Bages Averous to Echo de Lynch-Bages.

5 (Cinquième Cru) |
John Lynch
Bages
Echo de Lynch-Bages
Moussas
Echo de Lynch-Bages
