Why Has the Surname of an Irish Merchant Remained in the Vineyards of Margaux for More Than 250 Years?

"Kirwan" is not a French place-name. It is the surname of Mark Kirwan, a merchant who came to Bordeaux in the mid-eighteenth century from Galway, a port city in western Ireland. Before his arrival, the property was known as Domaine de Lassalle.
How, then, did one migrant's surname become the name of the land? The starting point was his marriage to the daughter of Sir John Collingwood, a Bordeaux merchant who owned the Lassalle estate. As Collingwood's son-in-law, Mark expanded the property and gave it his own surname. Ownership changed several times afterward. The name "Kirwan," however, remained.

From Lassalle to Kirwan
The château's official history presents Mark Kirwan as one of the "Wine Geese," merchants who left Ireland for the vineyards of France. He came from Galway and settled in Bordeaux in the mid-eighteenth century.
He married the daughter of Sir John Collingwood, a Bordeaux négociant who also owned the Lassalle estate. Mark gradually enlarged the property and replaced the name "Lassalle" with his own surname. The important point is that Kirwan was not an old local place-name belonging to a founding family. It emerged where migration, marriage, and the transfer of land met. An Irish surname took root in France.
"Wine Geese" is not a classification or a title. It is a name for people who crossed from Ireland to the continent and became involved in the production and distribution of wine. At Kirwan, that movement did not end with one person's biography. The surname became the château's name and remains on both the official 1855 list and local signs today. The path of a merchant who moved from the port of Galway to the port of Bordeaux became an identifier for the land itself.
The Botanist Who Designed a Garden in 1855
In 1855, Kirwan was listed as a Third Growth in the Médoc Classification. The same year, the château's official history introduces Camille Godard as its new owner. Godard was involved in the civic life of Bordeaux, had a keen interest in botany, and is also remembered for creating the city's Parc Bordelais.
He restored the château building and designed extensive grounds. The structure of the trees and gardens visible today is therefore not merely the by-product of renovating a wine estate. It is also the trace of a person who read the landscape through plants. Mark Kirwan left the name; Godard left the setting. Their work remains in different layers of the same property.
A Merchant Family Inherits a Merchant's Name
In 1926, management passed to the Schÿler family. They belong to Schröder & Schÿler, a family négociant house active in Bordeaux since 1739. According to the official history, Armand Schÿler had already signed a subscription agreement for future Kirwan harvests in 1902. Before the family took charge of the land, it had built a relationship with Kirwan by handling its production.
Jean-Henri Schÿler began a replanting programme in the 1960s, and Philippe Delfaut has served as general manager and winemaker since 2007. The second wine, Charmes de Kirwan, was introduced in 1993. An eighteenth-century merchant changed the estate's name; a family of Bordeaux merchants has carried that name forward. Kirwan records not only a succession of owners, but also the movement of merchants between port cities.
After Delfaut's arrival, a soil survey was carried out. The official site describes the 37-hectare vineyard as 35 plots containing 29 different soil types. Marriage and commerce changed the name of the land in the eighteenth century; replanting followed in the twentieth; and in the twenty-first, management moved toward a finer record of its soils. Beneath the surname that remained unchanged, the way the land is read has continued to evolve. It is a history in which a name was preserved while the understanding of the land kept changing.
Three Facts Worth Knowing
- Kirwan is not a place-name but the surname of Mark Kirwan, an Irish merchant. The estate took his name after his marriage to the daughter of the owner of Lassalle.
- The present grounds were shaped by Camille Godard, who became owner in 1855. Interested in botany, he was also the creator of Bordeaux's Parc Bordelais.
- The Schÿler family has managed the estate since 1926. Its négociant house, Schröder & Schÿler, had been connected with Kirwan's harvests since 1902, before the family took charge.
