Is Moated Château d'Issan Really a Medieval Castle? The Answer Lies in 1626

A water-filled moat, pointed towers, and a stone gateway make Château d'Issan look as though a medieval fortress has survived intact. A fortress called La Mothe-Cantenac did, in fact, stand here in the twelfth century. The château we see today, however, is not that same building.
About five hundred years later, Baron d'Essenault inherited the estate and demolished the old fortress. The present residence built in its place was completed in 1626, according to the estate's records. It was reconstructed as a new home while retaining the memory of older defences. The moat is not evidence that time stopped at Issan. It is evidence that parts of the past were retained through rebuilding.

A Twelfth-Century Fortress and a Seventeenth-Century Château
Issan's former name was La Mothe-Cantenac. The word "motte" is associated with a medieval defensive site. The château's official history recounts that wine from the estate was served at a wedding in 1152. The French official page itself uses a conditional form, however. The story should be read as a tradition carried by the estate, not as an event conclusively established by surviving contemporary evidence.
After Baron d'Essenault inherited the property in the seventeenth century, the twelfth-century building was demolished. The present château was built on its site and completed in 1626. Its gateway, towers, and moat retain forms associated with medieval defence, but the building itself is not medieval. In 1644, a stone wall was also constructed around the vineyard. It still encloses the historic plots and makes the boundary between château and vineyard visible.
Nor is the château merely a monument preserved as an exterior shell. According to the official site, it remains a lived-in building that has continued in use through several phases of restoration. After work by the Cruse family, it was added to France's supplementary inventory of historic monuments in 1970. The estate could mark four hundred years since the completion of the present château in 2026 not because the building was frozen in time, but because it was maintained as a residence while being repeatedly restored.
A Name Formed by Five Generations of One Family
The name "d'Issan" did not exist from the beginning either. According to the official history, five generations of the d'Essenault family succeeded one another from 1575, and a contraction of their surname became "d'Issan." La Mothe-Cantenac, the manor of Théobon, and then d'Issan: names changed with ownership and marriage until the shortened family name took root.
In 1855, d'Issan was listed as a Third Growth in the Médoc Classification. The vineyard later went through a period of neglect between the two World Wars. When the Cruse family acquired it in 1945, an official estate article states that only three of its 45 hectares were planted. The family restored the château, modernized the facilities, and replanted the vineyard. In 1970, the building was added to France's supplementary inventory of historic monuments.
Lionel Cruse led the reconstruction before management passed to later generations. The official château site counts the 2025 harvest as the eightieth carried out by the Cruse family at Issan. It marks the fact that the work begun with three planted hectares in 1945 was not a single renovation, but a continuing effort across generations.
Two Families Continue the Story
From 1998, Emmanuel Cruse, the family's third generation at Issan, continued work in the vineyard and cellars. He remains the estate's general manager. In 2013, the family of Françoise and Jacky Lorenzetti joined the Cruse family. The estate's current official account describes its management through the presence of both families.
The second wine, Blason d'Issan, was introduced in 1995. A twelfth-century fortress, a residence completed in 1626, a stone wall from 1644, reconstruction from 1945, and two families in the present: the moat does not enclose a single period. What was demolished, what was preserved, and what was later added all overlap within the same outline. The moat is also a boundary where preservation and continued use have coexisted.
Three Facts Worth Knowing
- The present château is not the twelfth-century fortress itself. It was built after the old structure was demolished and, according to estate records, completed in 1626.
- The story of the 1152 wedding is a historical tradition that the official château site also presents conditionally. It should be treated as a story linked to the former La Mothe-Cantenac, not as conclusively documented contemporary fact.
- The Cruse family has been involved since 1945 and the Lorenzetti family since 2013. Emmanuel Cruse is the current general manager.
