Watercolor illustration of vineyard paths rising across Milon hill

Next to Château Lafite Rothschild, the Same Owner but a Different Name: Château Duhart-Milon Took Its Name 94 Years Before the Acquisition

Watercolor illustration of vineyard paths rising across Milon hill

Viewed only through today's map and ownership, Château Duhart-Milon might appear to form a pair with Château Lafite Rothschild. Its vineyards adjoin Lafite on the western side, with most of them lying in almost one continuous block. Since 1962, Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite has owned both estates.

Adjacency and current ownership alone, however, do not explain the name Duhart-Milon. The name was established in 1868, 94 years before the current owner acquired the estate. Following the two words on the label leads not to the twentieth-century acquisition, but to an eighteenth-century seaman and the hill where he and his wife lived.

The setting is Pauillac in the northern Médoc, where the estate's vineyards adjoin Château Lafite Rothschild on the western side in almost one continuous block.

This proximity does not mean that the two estates began with the same name. The previously published Lafite page covers the history of Château Lafite Rothschild itself; the points of connection examined here extend only to current ownership and location. The name Duhart-Milon was formed from a different personal history and place-name.

“Duhart” Is a Seaman's Surname; “Milon” Is the Hill Where the Couple Lived

The first half of the name comes from the surname of Jean Duhart, while the second comes from Milon hill. According to the official history, Jean Duhart and Suzanne Casteja married in 1778 and lived on this hill. The present compound name joins one person's surname to the place where the couple made their home.

A story also presents Jean Duhart as a privateer active in the eighteenth century. The estate's official material, however, introduces this account as oral tradition. From the official historical research, the verifiable line used in this article extends only to his career as a seaman and the captain's license he obtained in 1774.

This article therefore does not turn the oral account into a categorical statement about his career. It also omits the conjecture that he died at sea and the hypothesis about how he met Suzanne. The 1774 license, the marriage in 1778, and the couple's life on Milon hill are the three documented points placed on the line leading to the name.

The Nephew Who Inherited 14 Hectares and the Compound Name Established in 1868

After the couple, Suzanne's nephew Pierre Casteja inherited 14 hectares and consolidated them with other parcels. The important distinction is between the area inherited and the point at which the present name appeared. The inheritance of 14 hectares cannot be presented as simultaneous with the establishment of the name in 1868.

In 1855, the estate was classified as a Fourth Growth (Quatrième Cru). The current list maintained by the 1855 Classification Council also records Château Duhart-Milon as a Fourth Growth in Pauillac. The official history, meanwhile, dates the change of name to “Duhart-Milon” to 1868. The 1855 classification and the adoption of the present name are therefore separate events in the chronology.

The two words joined in 1868 refer to Jean Duhart and Milon hill. At that point, 94 years still remained before the acquisition by the current owner. Placing the establishment of the name first, rather than working backward from today's ownership, preserves the order of the person and place remembered on the label.

The Casteja family retained ownership until 1937. Five owners then followed one another, and the estate was fragmented. This article does not supplement the record with claims about who held which parcel at a particular moment beyond the material reviewed. The established line is that ownership changed several times and the estate went through fragmentation before the 1962 acquisition.

The Same Owner Since 1962, but Still a Separate Estate

In 1962, Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite acquired Château Duhart-Milon. The estate thereby came to share an owner with the neighboring Château Lafite Rothschild. Yet the name Duhart-Milon was not given at the time of this acquisition. The correct order is that an estate bearing a name established in 1868 later came under the same owner.

The location likewise does not imply a merger. The official material establishes that Duhart-Milon's vineyards lie west of Lafite and that most of them form an almost continuous adjoining block. In the 1855 Classification Council's list, Château Duhart-Milon appears under its own name. Even though the estates are neighbors and now have the same owner, their names and chronologies must be read separately.

Today, Eric Kohler serves as technical director of both estates. This fact is used only to identify a shared element of the current organization, not to draw a comparison of quality or assessment. The point established here is solely who holds technical responsibility.

The second wine, Moulin de Duhart, takes its name from a watermill that once stood on an adjoining plateau. It retains “Duhart” while adding the memory of the mill through the word “Moulin.” Both the principal label and the second wine can therefore be read through the people and places in their names, rather than through taste or rank.

The key to explaining this estate is not to turn its proximity to Lafite into praise. Adjacency is a matter of geography, the shared owner belongs to the ownership history from 1962 onward, and Duhart-Milon is a name established in 1868. Keeping these facts separate allows the story to begin with “next to Lafite” but end with Château Duhart-Milon's own chronology.

Three Facts Worth Knowing

  • “Duhart” comes from the surname of Jean Duhart, and “Milon” from the hill where the couple lived. The privateer account is distinguished as oral tradition; this article treats only his seafaring career and the 1774 captain's license as verified biographical facts.
  • The estate was renamed Duhart-Milon in 1868. That was 94 years before its acquisition by the current owner in 1962, so the name cannot be explained by the present ownership.
  • The vineyards adjoin Château Lafite Rothschild on the western side in almost one continuous block, and the estates have shared an owner since 1962. Château Duhart-Milon is nevertheless recorded separately under its own name in the 1855 classification list.
