Why Are “Primitivo” and “Zinfandel” Genetically the Same Grape?

Watercolour illustration of a woman among low-trained vines on the red soils associated with Primitivo

Primitivo is the name of a black grape variety grown in Puglia, Italy. But the very same variety is known, across the Atlantic in California, by an entirely different name: “Zinfandel.” Behind these two names lies one surprising fact, revealed by DNA analysis at the end of the 20th century.

The Story Behind the Name

A name meaning “early ripening”

The name “Primitivo,” said to derive from the Latin “primativus” (meaning “early ripening”), describes a characteristic of the variety itself. According to the story handed down, at the end of the 18th century Don Francesco Filippo Indellicati, a priest in Gioia del Colle, Puglia, identified a strain within a local variety then known as “Zagarese” that ripened markedly earlier than the rest (around mid-August) and gave it this name. This naming episode rests on a single source: a record based on a survey conducted in 1919 by the ampelographer (grape-variety scholar) Giuseppe Musci. It is positioned as a local tradition dependent on that single historical document.

Two names that matched across the sea

In December 2001, grape geneticist Carol Meredith of the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), working with Croatian researchers, confirmed through DNA analysis that California’s “Zinfandel” and Italy’s “Primitivo” are genetically identical varieties. The two were further found to be identical to “Crljenak Kaštelanski,” a variety still existing on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast. This result was formally announced in June 2002 at an academic conference held in California. The name “Primitivo” describes an agricultural trait — early ripening — while “Zinfandel” is simply the American name for the same grape; the origin of both lies in Croatia.

A grape name built into a place-name designation

Primitivo is a grape variety name; it does not, by itself, designate a place of origin. The actual place-name designations are two: the dry “Primitivo di Manduria DOC” (DOC = a classification that controls a wine’s designation of origin), and the naturally sweet “Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale DOCG,” which requires a minimum natural alcohol content of 16% vol. Both are formed by incorporating the grape variety name into the designation itself. The classification “DOCG” (one of the classifications under which Italy officially guarantees a wine’s origin) is here used in a different context from the place-name-led designations covered elsewhere in this series.

Three Things to Look for on the Label

  1. Presence of the place-name designation “Primitivo di Manduria” — The difference between a label showing only the variety name (such as IGT) and one carrying a DOC designation with a place name.
  2. The DOC/DOCG seal (fascetta) — A clue to whether the wine carries the guarantee of a place-name designation.
  3. Presence of “Dolce Naturale” — Distinguishes the dry “Primitivo di Manduria DOC” from the naturally sweet “Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale DOCG.”

Common Confusions

  1. The misconception that Zinfandel is a “similar but different variety” — DNA analysis has in fact confirmed the two are genetically identical.
  2. The misconception that Primitivo is a place name — Primitivo is a grape variety name; the place-name designation is separately defined as “Primitivo di Manduria,” among others.
  3. The misconception that Zinfandel originates in America — Its genetic origin lies in a native variety from Croatia’s Dalmatian coast.

Watercolour illustration of a woman among low-trained vines on the red soils associated with Primitivo

Watercolour illustration of a woman among low-trained vines on the red soils associated with Primitivo

DOCG(原産地を国が保証する、イタリアワインの呼称区分のひとつ)という区分そのものは、本シリーズ他記事で扱う産地名主体の呼称とは異なる文脈で用いられている。
