Italian Wine Through Names and Places

On the Label, “Franciacorta” Is the Name of a Place — and of What Happened Inside the Bottle

Watercolour illustration of a woman looking across a lake toward vineyard-covered hills in Franciacorta

“Franciacorta” is the name of a place in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, and at the same time, a term for the method of secondary fermentation in the bottle — fermenting the wine a second time inside the very bottle it has been sealed in. In this production area, where a place name and a production method are bound together within a single word, that same connection shows up in a distinctive way within the labeling regulations as well.

The Story Behind the Name

The Name’s Origin Lies in a Medieval Tax Record

The place name “Franciacorta” is said to derive from “francae curtes” — a Latin term for tax-exempt medieval manorial estates. This name was first recorded in 1277, in a chronicle of the city of Brescia, as “Franzacurta.” However, 1277 is not the year the place name itself came into being — it is the year the name first appears in the record. The producers’ consortium (Consorzio) itself, on its official website, positions this origin as “the most credible hypothesis,” and does not present it as an established historical fact. The production regulations (disciplinare) further state that, by 1429, a document from Doge Francesco Foscari of the Republic of Venice already recorded the boundaries of this area. The region bearing this place name was recognized as a DOCG (one of the classifications under which Italy officially guarantees a wine’s origin) by ministerial decree dated September 1, 1995.

The Words the Label Is Not Allowed to Use

The name Franciacorta carries one more unexpected rule. Article 7 of the production regulations explicitly prohibits, in labeling and designation, the use of terms referring to the production method — such as “metodo classico” (“classic method”) or “metodo tradizionale” — as well as the term “vino spumante” (“sparkling wine”). Although the labor-intensive method of secondary fermentation in the bottle is precisely what lies at the core of this wine, the label cannot state that method in words. What appears on the label is the geographical designation “Franciacorta” itself — a single word standing in for both the place of origin and the method of production.

Three Things to Look for on the Label

  1. No wording describing the production method — Article 7 prohibits the labeling terms themselves, such as “metodo classico” or “vino spumante.” The very absence of any method description on the label is, in itself, a sign of compliance with the regulation.
  2. The designation type as printed (“Franciacorta” / “Franciacorta” Satèn / “Franciacorta” Rosé) — This designation itself is specified under the regulation as a required labeling item.
  3. The word “Franciacorta” stamped on the top of the cork — The visible portion of the cork above the bottle is required to bear this designation.

Common Confusions

  1. It is often assumed the label reads “Metodo Classico” — in fact, the display of such method-related terms is itself prohibited by the regulation.
  2. Confusion between Franciacorta (DOCG, a sparkling wine) and Curtefranca (DOC), the designation given to still wines from the same production area — though both trace back to the same origin, “francae curtes,” they are separate designations in different categories.
  3. Mistaking “Franciacorta” for a grape variety — it is in fact a place name, and the grape varieties used are Chardonnay, Pinot Nero, and others.

この地名を冠する産地は、1995年9月1日付の大臣令によりDOCG(原産地を国が保証する、イタリアワインの呼称区分のひとつ)に認定された。
