Barbaresco Is Another Designation Built on the Same Nebbiolo Grape as Barolo

Watercolour illustration of a woman looking across the vineyard hills associated with Barbaresco

Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo, the same grape as its neighboring Barolo, yet the two are legally classified as entirely separate DOCGs. What divides them is the boundary of the production zone and differences in the aging requirements. This article traces how the designation “Barbaresco” came to be institutionalized.

The Story Behind the Name

The same grape, a different statute

Barbaresco is a production zone spanning three comuni (municipalities) in Cuneo Province, Piedmont — Barbaresco, Neive, and Treiso — and was recognized as a DOCG (one of the classifications under which Italy officially guarantees a wine’s origin) in 1980. The grape variety required for use is 100% Nebbiolo — the same variety as Barolo. Though the two share the same grape, they are institutionalized as separate designations with a different denominazione (place-name designations), differing in both production zone and aging requirements. Barbaresco’s minimum aging requirement is 26 months (including 9 months in wood), while Barolo’s is a minimum of 38 months (including 18 months in wood) — the same variety, grown on the same Piedmont hills, yet two designations clearly delineated by law.

An interrupted succession, revived in 1958

The current producers’ cooperative, Produttori del Barbaresco, was founded in 1958 when the parish priest Don Fiorino Marengo brought together 19 small-scale producers. This cooperative has a prehistory. The agronomist Domizio Cavazza is known for having established a precedent for cooperative winemaking in Barbaresco in the 1890s (sources differ on the exact founding year, giving either 1894 or 1898, and it remains unconfirmed), but that organization was closed during the Fascist era of the 1920s, after Cavazza’s death. What Don Marengo inherited in 1958 was not a legal entity but, as Produttori itself explains, the idea of an “unforgettable precedent.” Roughly 30 years separate the earlier organization from the current cooperative, and the relationship cannot be told as a simple continuity.

Theories on the origin of the name

As for the origin of the place name “Barbaresco,” the DOCG production regulation (disciplinare) itself presents multiple theories side by side: one that traces it to a wine called “Barbaritium,” said to have drawn the Gauls to this land, and another that traces it to “Barbari” (barbarians). Rather than the origin itself, the regulation places emphasis on the fact that, in 1966, Barbaresco became — together with Barolo — one of the earliest denominazione (place-name designations) officially recognized in Italy.

Three Things to Look for on the Label

  1. Aging period stated for the standard wine versus Riserva — The standard wine may be released beginning in January of the third year after harvest, following a minimum of 26 months of aging (including 9 months in wood). The “Riserva” designation is permitted only after a minimum of 50 months of aging (including 9 months in wood), starting in January of the fifth year.
  2. Presence of an additional geographical designation (subzone name) — If a vineyard name such as Rabajà or Asili appears directly beneath the main designation, it indicates labeling that highlights a single vineyard.
  3. Presence of the DOCG state seal (fascetta) — Wines entitled to use DOCG typically carry a numbered state seal on the container.

Common Confusions

  1. Confusing Barbaresco with Barbera — The spelling and sound are similar, but Barbaresco is a village name (place-name designation) while Barbera is a grape variety name; the two belong to entirely different classification categories.
  2. The relationship with Barolo — Both are made from the same 100% Nebbiolo, but they are separate designations with a different denominazione (place-name designations) (see the separate “Barolo” article in this series).
  3. Confusing the current cooperative with its predecessor organization — Produttori del Barbaresco, founded in 1958, and the cooperative winemaking precedent that Cavazza established in the 1890s are different in both name and organizational substance, separated by roughly 30 years. The relationship cannot be told as a simple continuity.

Watercolour illustration of a woman looking across the vineyard hills associated with Barbaresco
