BENIOTOME is a pioneering sesame shochu from Beniotome Shuzo in Kurume, Fukuoka. Founded in 1978 by Haruno Hayashida, the distillery created one of the world’s earliest sesame-based distilled spirits with the aim of building a shochu that could stand beside Western spirits in aroma and refinement. This standard 25% ABV expression uses sesame as its defining ingredient, with white koji and low-pressure vacuum distillation shaping a clean, lightly roasted profile: nutty sesame aroma, soft grain sweetness, smooth texture, and a crisp finish without heaviness.
Culinary affinity: Its roasted sesame aroma and clean finish pair well with grilled chicken, yakitori, sesame-dressed vegetables, tofu dishes, tempura, karaage, pork, and nutty or soy-based Japanese and Thai dishes. It works especially well on the rocks, with soda, or in a light highball where the sesame note can support food without becoming too heavy.
