A Family Line Dating Back to 1625, and the Rescue of 400 Casks
The story begins in 2004. Toa Shuzo, Akuto’s family business, was sold due to financial difficulties, and the new owner planned to dispose of roughly 400 casks of maturing whisky. Akuto, borrowing money from relatives and doing whatever he could to raise funds, bought the casks himself. “I had to bring these children into the world with my own hands,” he felt. In the early days, short on funds, he even reused wine bottles for the first releases. The rescued whisky was later bottled as single casks in the 54-bottle “Card Series”—52 playing cards plus two jokers—which stands as a defining collection in the history of Japanese whisky. Only an estimated four complete sets exist worldwide, and in 2020, one full set sold at Bonhams Hong Kong for about US$1.52 million, a world-record price for a whisky series.
The Harmony of 11 Distilleries Across Five Countries
White Label sits at the heart of Akuto’s regular lineup. It is blended from nine malt whiskies and two grain whiskies sourced from 11 distilleries in Japan, Scotland, Ireland, the United States, and Canada, with key malt from Chichibu Distillery at its core. It is bottled at 46% ABV, without chill filtration or added coloring. In recent years, as labeling standards for “Japanese whisky” have become more stringent, Venture Whisky has from the outset clearly identified this bottle as a “World Blended Whisky,” openly disclosing that it includes whiskies from outside Japan. That transparency is part of what underpins the brand’s credibility.
Mizunara Vats: An Eastern Solera
The defining characteristic of this expression emerges after these whiskies from around the world are brought to Japan. At Chichibu Distillery, mizunara oak washbacks are used for fermentation. The matured whiskies from each country are then given additional maturation in large mizunara vats in Chichibu, taking on an Oriental incense-like aroma reminiscent of sandalwood and kyara. It is said that the process resembles the solera system used for sherry: a portion of the previous blend is left behind, and the new blend is added on top. The passage of time from five countries quietly mingles within the grain of Chichibu’s mizunara oak.
A Continuing Legacy of Craftsmanship
Ichiro Akuto was named Master Blender of the Year at the International Spirits Challenge in 2019, and in 2024 he was inducted into Whisky Magazine’s Hall of Fame, becoming the fifth Japanese person to receive the honor. His limited-edition blends are said to have won “World’s Best” in the Blended Limited Release category at the World Whiskies Awards six times: in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2023, 2025, and 2026. White Label is the regular expression of that philosophy: whiskies from five countries, secondary maturation in mizunara, and a family lineage spanning nearly 400 years.
