Pomerol, Bordeaux
CHÂTEAU LA CROIX SAINT-GEORGESLa Croix Saint-Georges 2021
On the Pomerol plateau, this small estate sits close enough to Le Pin that only a single row of vines separates the two properties, with Petit Village and Pétrus as neighbors on the other sides. From this narrow band of gravel, the Janoueix family shapes a Merlot-led wine built on density and precision rather than scale — right down to barrels cut to the owner's own specification.

The Estate
Château La Croix Saint-Georges belongs to Famille Joseph Janoueix, whose wine trade traces back to F. Janoueix's founding of a Margaux-based house in 1898. The Pomerol property itself was acquired by the family in 1932, and its winemaking has been guided on-site by Jean-Philippe Janoueix since 1999. He later built dedicated cellars for a wine that had once been vinified at a neighboring château.
The vineyard sits on the Pomerol plateau, sharing borders with Le Pin, Petit Village and Pétrus. Its gravel-and-clay soils drain quickly, pushing vines to root deep in search of water and coolness, while planting density reaches up to 12,000 vines per hectare — among the highest in the appellation.

Scale1–5
BG wine structure estimate
Comparative profile within the Bacchus Global wine range.
Cherry, raspberry, rose petal and violet, framed by discreet spicy notes from new oak.
Medium-bodied and fleshy, with supple tannins and a lively line of acidity; fruit stays forward and vibrant on the finish.

Temperature
Serve cool, around 15.5°C — a touch below typical red-wine temperature — to keep the fruit fresh and lifted.
Timing
The classically built 2021 does not need extended decanting; a short aeration is enough to open the aromas. Drink from 2026 through 2043.
Glassware
Bordeaux-style glass with a tall bowl.
At the table
The wine's supple tannins, gently forward fruit and lively acidity give it an easy range across cuisines built on savory depth rather than heat.
Because the tannin structure stays soft and the acidity does the lifting, the wine sits comfortably alongside umami-rich, lightly seasoned dishes, while dishes built on heavy chili or sweet glaze can overwhelm its fruit.
Japanese
- Sukiyaki with a light, savory tare
- Roast duck
- Lean wagyu (akami)
Why it worksThe soft red-fruit character and gentle acidity echo the umami depth of dashi and soy-based seasoning without competing with it.
Thai
- Massaman beef curry (mild)
- Grilled meats
- Light Northern Thai meat dishes
Why it worksMild spice levels let the wine's fruit and supple tannins stay balanced; dishes built on high chili or heavy lime would overpower its structure.
Western
- Roast veal
- Roast chicken
- Wild mushroom dishes
Why it worksClassic Bordeaux pairing logic: the wine's fleshy mid-palate and fine tannins suit lean roasted meats and earthy mushroom preparations.
From cellar to bottle
Winemaking
Grapes are moved by gravity into open wooden vats without crushing, then fermented across four 70-hectoliter vats with Burgundian-style pigeage. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel, followed by 16 to 20 months of aging in new French oak, part of it in cigar-shaped barrels favored by the estate.
Product detail
The 2021 blend is 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, grown on 4.5 hectares of gravel-and-clay soil planted at densities up to 12,000 vines per hectare.
Origin & Terroir
The estate's façade carries a carved figure of Saint Georges on horseback, a reference to the property's historic ties to the Knights Hospitaller of St John of Jerusalem.
