A Quiet Evolution in Bangkok

KANPAI THAILAND 2026, a Celebration of Japanese Sake and Spirits

Over the past few years, the landscape surrounding Japanese sake in Thailand has been quietly, yet unmistakably, changing. Once tucked away in the corners of high-end Japanese restaurants, artisanal sake bottles are now appearing on the menus of Bangkok’s contemporary bistros and wine bars. A Japanese alcohol event held in 2025 drew over 1,300 enthusiasts over three days. Building on that momentum, the 2026 edition is set to expand significantly in both scale and narrative depth.

A Confluence of Craft: 40 Breweries, One Shared Space

From August 28 to 30, 2026, “KANPAI THAILAND 2026” will take place at Bangkok’s Queen Sirikit National Convention Center as part of the Japanese cultural expo “Bangkok Nippon Haku 2026.” Featuring 40 dedicated booths representing 40 distinct breweries, it is poised to become the most comprehensive gathering of Japanese alcohol culture ever held in Thailand.

The event is organized jointly by a collective of Thailand’s leading importers and distributors. What makes this event a turning point is the fact that these purveyors—previously operating independently—have come together to build a unified platform. Supported by the Embassy of Japan in Thailand and JETRO, the initiative underscores its role as a meaningful cultural exchange.

Around 160 carefully selected labels will be showcased, spanning not only sake, but also shochu, umeshu, liqueurs, and Japanese-made spirits. The unique terroir—the water, rice, and brewing philosophies from the north of Japan to the south—will converge in a single venue.

An Exploration Governed by Personal Rhythm

One of the event’s most compelling aspects is the autonomy it grants visitors to shape their own journey. Rather than following a rigid itinerary, guests can choose from paths tailored to their personal curiosity: a thoughtful introduction featuring a curated tasting glass and coins for casual exploration; a dedicated timeframe to sample freely across a diverse spectrum; or an exclusive arrangement granting access to rare and limited archival sakes.

The event utilizes a coin-based tasting system where different labels require varying amounts of coins, allowing guests to curate their experience—from casual sips to bottles worth lingering over. Free from pressure or commercial urgency, visitors can wander through the 40 breweries at their own tempo. This sense of space and freedom lies at the heart of the experience.

The Terroir and Philosophy of the Pinnacle

One area expected to draw particular attention is the special premium space. From highly sought-after daiginjo sake that remains elusive even within Japan, to meticulously aged expressions, as well as shochu and umeshu that vividly reflect their local terroir, this space will feature labels rarely encountered in daily life.

These are bottles defined not merely by scarcity or prestige, but by the personal philosophies of the artisans who craft them. Visitors will discover the extraordinary diversity hidden within the single words “sake” and “shochu.” The opportunity to compare the work of breweries with entirely distinct personalities side-by-side remains exceedingly rare in Thailand.

A Dialogue Beyond the Glass

The venue will also host intimate sessions where brewery representatives share their craft directly with visitors. Supported by professional interpreters, guests can engage with the brewers’ visions seamlessly. Learning about the precise intent behind rice polishing ratios or the character of local spring water reveals the rich stories hidden behind each pour.

If KANPAI THAILAND serves to broaden the appreciation for Japanese alcohol culture, the premium space illuminates its absolute peak. True cultural appreciation flourishes when both the broad foundation and the highest expressions are presented together. For three days in August, Bangkok becomes a window into a living tradition—a place not just to taste, but to witness a culture quietly taking root across the sea. (Mr. Bacchus)
