Champagne! 4. The Historical Heritage of Madame Clicquot

Madame Clicquot is a prominent historical figure in the region. While many know the name, the history behind Barbe Nicole Ponsardin—who became Madame Clicquot and later “La Veuve Clicquot”—is a significant part of the industry’s heritage. Founded in 1772 in Reims, the house of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin has a long history. Madame Clicquot took over the management of the business at the age of 27. During her time, she introduced several technical developments to production methods. In 1810, she produced a vintage champagne. Later, in 1816, she developed the “riddling table”, a device designed to facilitate the removal of sediment after fermentation, allowing for the clarification of the wine. This technical process is still widely used in the industry today.

In 1818, she adopted a new approach by creating a rosé blend. The production involved blending wine with 12% of Pinot Noir red wine. The red wine used in this process was produced using the maceration method

Through her management and dedication to the craft, Barbe Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin contributed to the development of the industry. She passed away at Boursault on July 29, 1866, at the age of 88. To honor her history, the Veuve Clicquot award was established in 1972 to recognize female entrepreneurs. This award is now presented in 18 countries. Recently, a historical photograph authenticated as Madame Clicquot was discovered, adding to the only previously known image of her.
