Two Umeshu from Nishiyama Sake Brewery Earn High Marks at International Competitions — “Expanding Possibilities”
Two kinds of umeshu made by Nishiyama Sake Brewery in Tamba City, Hyogo Prefecture, received high praise at international competitions. In the “Kura Master 2025” umeshu contest held in France, “Plum Tonic Baishin” won the Gold Medal, while at the “Luxembourg Sake Challenge 2025” held in Luxembourg, “Baishin Shunju” received the Platinum Medal. It was the brewery’s first time entering either contest.
At “Kura Master,” judges included leading French sommeliers and bartenders. Chosen from 73 entries, “Plum Tonic Baishin” is distinctive for its generous pieces of Nanko plums. With an alcohol content of 16 percent, it can be enjoyed in many different ways.
The “Luxembourg Sake Challenge,” where “Baishin Shunju” was highly rated, began in 2022. Sake sommeliers and experts from around the world served as judges. “Baishin Shunju” is a lightly cloudy sake made with paste from fully ripe Nanko plums, offering a peach-like aroma and rich sweetness.
Brewer Atsushi Oda (52) said, “We are very happy that people around the world have recognized us and that the possibilities for umeshu are growing. We will not sit back; we will keep exploring to make even better products.”
