Bruno Dangin, The Historical Terroir of Molesme: Where Champagne meets Burgundy

Domaine Bruno Dangin.

The Father and the Son

In the village of Molesme, amongst the rolling foothills near the border of the Aube and the Cote d’Or, lie the vineyards of Domaine Bruno Dangin.

Before founding his domain, Bruno spent over 30 years as an oenologist in the family estate in Champagne, Champagne Paul Dangin.

Historical Background

In the 12th century, these lands were planted with vineyards that depended on the abbey of Mores, founded by Saint Bernard de Clairvaux.

Bruno Dangin decided to start on a small Domaine in this region, identifying a terroir geographically extending from the Côte des Bars.

Geological and Legal Context

Geographically, this terroir is a natural extension of the southernmost appellation of Champagne, Côte des Bars. Indeed, before the entry into force of the first AOC law of May 6, 1919, this vineyard was historically part of the Champagne harvesting area.

This AOC law, based on administrative limitations of the departments, excluded the Châtillonnais vineyard (250 ha) from the AOC Champagne.

However, as Bruno explains, the geological and climate conditions remain continuous with the vineyard of the Côte des Bars.

Since the regulation change, the wine produced on that terroir has been classified as “Crémant de Bourgogne”.

Production Method

Bruno and his son Matthieu apply their winemaking experience to this terroir. The Domaine, now led by Matthieu Dangin, is certified organic and biodynamic.

An extremely conscientious vineyard work has been the family’s priority.

In the cellar, work is done with long ageing on the lees and dosage is always kept to a minimum. The production follows methods similar to those used in the neighboring region.

Product Characteristics

Bruno Dangin notes: “The climate and the soil are identical to southern Champagne. The difference in production regulation lies in the minimum aging time. Our Crémant de Bourgogne vintages have an aging period that often exceeds the minimum required for Champagne.”

The style of the wines is characterized by being tight, acidic and dry, reflecting the specificities of the soil.
