Domaine Decelle & Fils Paints a Portrait of Chambolle-Musigny

In the world of French wine, there’s an unspoken rule: earn renown in one region, and that should be enough. But Olivier Decelle has transcended this convention—twice.
In the southern Roussillon, he took the reins of Mas Amiel, a storied name in fortified wines. In Saint-Émilion, he owns Château Jean Faure. Having established an illustrious legacy in the South and the West, he chose Burgundy as the stage for his third prestigious endeavor.
Founded in 2013 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Decelle & Fils lists as its co-founder the Northern Rhône winemaker Pierre-Jean Villa. The sun of the South, the clay of Bordeaux’s Right Bank, the granite of the Rhône—two men who know disparate terroirs intimately graced Pinot Noir’s sacred ground.
Chambolle-Musigny, the “Silk Village” Among Burgundy’s village appellations, Chambolle-Musigny carries an exclusive prestige. Unlike Gevrey-Chambertin, celebrated for power, or Vosne-Romanée, known for structural depth, Chambolle has long been revered for its “silken elegance.” Delicacy is its signature; what’s demanded here is not force, but grace.
Decelle & Fils’ Chambolle-Musigny is born from Pinot Noir vines aged 45 to 70 years, sourced from an esteemed local artisan who has long worked in the village. Choosing purchased grapes rather than estate fruit is a natural entry point for newcomers in Burgundy—but it is also an exacting journey, because your skill is judged, uncompromisingly, by one thing: which grapes you choose.
2021—A Testament to a Winemaker’s Artistry For Burgundy, 2021 was a year of profound challenge.
A late frost in April struck the vineyards, with hail damage compounding the blow in some areas. Yields fell by 30 to 50 percent compared to an average year. From the few clusters that survived, damaged berries were removed one by one by hand. What remained was extraordinarily rare, yet remarkably concentrated in pure fruit essence.
Reflecting the cool growing season, 2021 Burgundy shows a shared tendency toward fresh acidity and a lighter body. Rather than trying to “correct” those traits, Decelle & Fils embraced their authentic character. Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts only, with partial whole-cluster use and a cold pre-fermentation maceration. The wine is aged for 12 to 16 months in French oak barrels and 500-liter demi-muids, then bottled unfined and unfiltered.
The Philosophy of Minimal Intervention With organic certification (Ecocert) and a practical, hands-on embrace of biodynamic methods, Decelle & Fils’ philosophy in both vineyard and cellar consistently centers on low intervention. No cultured yeasts. No filtration. No fining. They listen for what terroir and weather have to say, guiding the wine with an imperceptible, masterful touch.
Jean Lupatelli, who once served as head winemaker at the domaine, later moved to one of Burgundy’s most revered estates, Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé. The very fact that talent flowed from a young cellar to a master’s house serves as a resounding testament to the level Decelle & Fils had already reached.
Raspberry, Violet, and Whispers of Limestone In the glass, the wine shows a pale ruby hue. Aromas rise of red fruits—raspberry and cherry—alongside violets and a whisper of spice. On the palate, delicate tannins glide like silk across the tongue, while bright acidity tightens the whole frame. The cool imprint of 2021 and the mineral imprint of Chambolle’s limestone seamlessly intertwine in the finish.
Roussillon, Saint-Émilion, and now Burgundy. The narrative woven by a maker who has crossed three terroirs—now beginning in the “silk village”—has only just unfolded its captivating prologue. (Mr.Bacchus)
