Located in Ammershevilles, Alsace, France, Domaine Léon Heitzmann is a family-owned winery founded in 1804. The winery is run by sixth generation Léon Heitzmann, who has made a name for himself by using modern biodynamic viticulture while maintaining a long history and tradition.
Domaine Léon Heitzmann owns 17 hectares of vineyards in the heart of Alsace, which have been farmed Biologique since 2006 and Biodynamie since 2008. This change is part of an effort to cultivate grapes in harmony with the natural environment. Domaine Léon Heitzmann has been featured in prestigious wine media such as “Bettane+Desseauve”, and is highly regarded for its quality and ecological commitment.
Domaine Léon Heitzmann practices sustainable agriculture, having received “ECOCERT” certification in 2009 and “demeter” certification in 2015. Here, viticulture is carried out in harmony with nature. All harvesting is done by hand and only natural yeast is used for fermentation. In addition, the grapes are carefully selected from vines averaging 40 years old through a clean fermentation process using stainless steel tanks. Sparkling wines, such as Crémant d’Alsace, are aged in bottle for more than 12 months using the Champagne method, resulting in a delicate and beautiful flavor.
Domaine Léon Heitzmann produces typical Alsace grape varieties such as Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Gris. Each wine undergoes a meticulous management and careful fermentation process to maximize the characteristics of the grapes, with Riesling being particularly highly appreciated for its elegant acidity and fruity aroma.
Domaine Léon Heitzmann’s wines have awarded in numerous wine competitions and have been especially well received at the “Decanter World Wine Awards” and the “Concours des Vins d’Alsace”. These awards are a proof of the quality and hard work of the winery.
In 2017, they bought the domaine from their Biodynamie friend CLEMENT KLUR and extended their reach by fermaging his vineyards as well. Wines such as the Cuvee Manekineko series, which appeared in the Japanese wine cartoon THE DROPS OF GOD, have also been carried on and improved in quality under the Léon Heitzmann name. With the advice of CLEMENT KLU, Domaine Léon Heitzmann is constantly evolving and its future is very exciting.
Domaine Léon Heitzmann continues to make innovative wines with an ecologically responsible approach, while preserving its history and traditions. Once you taste the wines from this winery, which practices sustainable agriculture in the rich natural environment of Alsace, you certainly will be fascinated by their deep flavors and aromas. As one of the leading biodynamic producers in Alsace, Domaine Léon Heitzmann’s future development will be highly interesting. (Mr.Bacchus)
