Guild – Satsuma Musou

To promote Kagoshima Prefecture’s renowned specialty, “shochu,” across Japan and the globe, the flagship brand “Satsuma Musou” was born. This shochu represents the united effort – a guild of brewery association members within the prefecture – responding to requests from the prefectural and city governments, and various organizations. The name, meaning “unparalleled in Satsuma,” was chosen through a public contest within the prefecture by a selection committee, including the esteemed writer Mr. Kyū Hatojū. In May 1966, this name was promoted nationally through the cooperation of all businesses within the Kagoshima Sake Brewers Cooperative guild. Subsequently, in October 1970, the organization incorporated, adopting the name of its flagship brand to become “Satsuma Musou Co., Ltd.,” the company known today.
